The marina – environment, sustainability and biodiversity in the Düsseldorfer Medienhafen

Düsseldorf's Medienhafen is mainly known for its impressive, modern architecture and lively atmosphere. What is perhaps less well known is the biodiversity in this area. Although the Medienhafen is an urban space, there are still various plant and animal species that have adapted to the urban environment. Green spaces, water areas and green roofs provide habitats for birds, insects and small mammals. This biodiversity helps to improve the urban climate and creates a pleasant atmosphere in the midst of the urban hustle and bustle. It's nice to see how nature and the city enrich each other here! We will also show you an overview of the flora and fauna, and you will be surprised how many different species of flora and fauna reside in the Media Harbour.
And we will introduce you to Rolf Gast or Living Waters. He had the idea of setting up a project to protect the waters. He has been closely associated with Marina Düsseldorf for almost 50 years. Being on the water himself and living from water sports, he became increasingly aware of how threatened the ecological balance of rivers and seas is.
Living Waters.eco was founded to stop the pollution of our waters and to strengthen aquatic ecosystems. With innovative and inspiring measures, we want to achieve a change in awareness for our basis of life, water. What makes us unique as a non-profit organization is that we make saving water tangible by working with partners to develop products and environmental solutions that bring visible and sustainable environmental benefits to local communities. We accompany all measures with effective, broadly effective communication that raises awareness and triggers a change in behavior.

In the download PDF we explain some projects and measures to promote biodiversity in Düsseldorf's Medienhafen.

Living Waters - Underwater aeration
Heat waves encourage the spread of blue-green algae in bodies of water - a major danger for fish and other aquatic animals. Aerators installed below the water surface keep the water moving and thus prevent the formation of blue-green algae and at the same time provide fish and aquatic plants with vital oxygen.
